Even after going through the basic terms, you might find yourself lost at the craps table. There is so much slang going around you’d think you were in a 1970′s British mobster flick. Never you fear, though. I’m going to give you another reference sheet to keep close when you feel like the only one at the craps table who’s speaking English.
Any craps: This means a bet that the next toss of the dice will yield a 2, 3 or 12 – the three possible ways of hitting craps.
Arm: I love this one. Every game has it’s mystique. Poker has Mr. Slim, blackjack has “the arm.” It’s actually not a single person, but more a belief that there is a player so incredible, so talented that he can control the result of the dice simply by holding them in his hand. Ramdomness, be damned! The arm will conquer all. Sounds dramatic, but it’s all part of the legend. And I’m not talking about dice control, either.
Back line: Just another name for the Don’t Pass Line, something even beginners should be familiar with.
Betting right: This is a bet that the next toss of the dice will be victorious on the Pass Line and Come bets. Of course, it can be argued that any bet that wins you money was the right bet.
Betting wrong: Opposite of right (in case you didn’t know). You’re gambling that the Don’t Pass Line and Don’t Come bets will win.
Big Red: A wager on any variation of seven coming up.
Boxman: Not John Locke (forgive me, I’m just getting into Lost), the boxman is the overseer of the table. He supervises the table, acts as the bank, and handles the chips. He’s basically the man.
Buffalo: Wagering on every hardway (2,2…3,3…etc) AND any seven.
Capped Dice: If you hear anyone utter this phrase before or after it’s your turn to toss the dice, run. It means someone thinks your dice are loaded. And someone bigger than you is coming to break your fingers – no questions asked.
C and E bet: A one-shot bet that banks on the very next roll being any craps or 11. YO-LEVEN!
Cold Table: Perhaps the easiest phrase to interpret out of this bunch, a cold table is what it sounds like – a table where nobody’s winning. Not even Demi More in a black dress could bring this table back from the abyss at the moment. Nobody’s making the point here – not even Robert Red…ah, you get it.
Well there are a bunch of new casino game terms for you to familiarize yourself with as you continue to get comfortable at the craps table. I’ll hit on another batch in the near future.
